“As you are well aware, Macedonia declared its independence from the former Yugoslavia over 15 years ago. Since then, Macedonia has undergone a peaceful transition from a republic in a failed communist state to a stable, multi-ethnic democracy. However, the country has encountered unexpected difficulties in simply gaining its neighbor’s acceptable of its name. In objecting to Macedonia’s name, Greece has claimed that the term ‘Macedonia’ implies territorial claims against Greek territory. The government of Greece has continued to maintain this position, despite several public statements of reassurance from the Macedonian government, including an amendment in the Macedonian Constitution stating that the ‘Republic of Macedonia has no territorial pretensions towards any neighboring state’. On April 5, the Macedonian people elected Gjorge Ivanov in peaceful elections. President-elect Ivanov has pledged to work with Greece to resolve their differences, and has said that resolving the name dispute would be his first priority as President”.
Τhe members of Congress stress these diplomatic tensions come at a time when Macedonia has met all criteria for membership in NATO. They remind that Macedonia is a participant in NATO combat operations in Afghanistan and currently functions as the logistical support center for NATO’s Kosovo forces
“The United States must continue to encourage our friends Greece and Macedonia to sit down together and agree on a common path forward for peace, reconciliation and partnership in the development of the southern Balkans. We look forward to working with you in the future to reach a speedy and equitable resolution on issues such as the name dispute so that there can be stability, prosperity and equity for all the region’s people”
